In this chapter we learned that the goal of Comprehension is understanding. That means that as you are reading you are thinking and finding meaning of what you are reading and understanding what you have read. After reading this chapter it helps me understand myself. I grew up in a home where you were not allowed to speak English only Spanish because both of my parents did not speak a word in English, but we were encourage to read Spanish literature and we were expected to write the Spanish language with its proper grammar. Growing up I was never an English reader and I was never encourage by anyone. After reading this chapter I have a better understanding as to why I struggle with Comprehension. I can read a book or a simple paragraphs and I feel"what the heck what did I just read!" I will read again and again until I get frustrated and discouraged. One thing I have notice is that if I like the topic I will not struggle as much, but when it comes to big words I get off track trying to find meaning of the words, or like the chapter says I start decoding.
As a teacher I want to make sure I have all kinds of literature available for my students so that way I can match their interest in their reading.

I can relate to what you are saying beause a friend of mine went through the someting. I didn't like going over to her house because her mom thought it was rude to speak english around them. I think that it was hard for them to understand what we were talking about and I had a hard time understanding why it was wrong to speak english if our language in school was english.
ReplyDeleteI completely understand what you are talking about, how you comprehend better whenever you enjoy the topic that the book is about because I am the same way. Honestly, I think we all learn like that and this is exactly what Mrs. Pickett was talking about with aesthetic and efferent reading. Whenever it comes to efferent reading, for example whenever I had to read my physics book for my physics class, I was able to "decode" just enough to do well on the test, but as far as long term understanding and comprehension of that topic I had no clue! You are definately not alone in that battle :)
