I actually did this activity with first graders in the after school program I worked for. I did not do the activity myself since the assigned me this group at the last minute, I needed something that would help us learn a little bit about them. I remember the kids having so much fun! Now I know how they felt. Having the opportunity to do activities like this, gives us the opportunity to experience that child in us. Activities like this helps us understand and learn from each other. I am a Chef, The best teacher I have is my mother. She taught us to cook "con el corazon" You cook with your heart! She tells me the best ingredient is "love". I relate my passion in cooking and baking with the passion of teaching. whenever I have an opportunity to implement food in the class room I take it. It helps me teach children about cultures and traditions. I find teaching and cooking with many similarities. In both you need this ingredients love , passion, patience and lots of recipes(ideas) I have learned that some children have to survive at home for many reasons, either because they are alone at home or for many other reasons. I feel this is something that children need and I can connect with them. When you cook you experience many subjects History, Math, Science, Reading, Writing, Art and lots of fun! I enjoy reading books especially when you could include food, but of course it is not as easy as it sounds you have to take into consideration school policies and food allergies. So one day even if I have to form my own club after school I will do it. Writing and creating recipes, is like writing and creating songs, or stories!
This is a small song I wrote with the same rhythm as ( swimming in the pool!)
Cooking! Cooking!
that is what I love!
Teaching! Teaching!
Helping Measure up!
Hot days, cold days lets have fun all day!
Learning! Learning!
as we COOK and PLAY!!

Blanca,
ReplyDeleteI love how you compared cooking to teaching...I never have thought of the two like that. But you pointed out some great things, in order for them to be of great quality they do both require love, passion, patience, and lots of ideas. You definately made me look at it in a different way. Good job!
