It is very important for a teacher to know the true meaning of Culture. Reading this chapter helped me understand that as a teacher we will be serving a diversity of students. Each child that walks through the school doors is unique in their own way, all this goes back to their culture. Culture can be a person beliefs, values, goals, attitudes, practices and all this is integrated in their behaviors and customs.
I enjoyed this chapter because it talks about schools needing to be responsive to culture and meeting the needs of all learners.
I believe that it does not matter your ethnicity whether your are White, Hispanic, Mexican, Black, Asian, etc. each individual has their own culture. Organizational culture will improve the quality of a school. Reading Multicultural books to students will help some students connect or understand with their classmates. It is good to think outside the box and know that students come in all shapes and sizes metaphorically speaking when it comes to culture. Each child will teach you something new and positive because everything you learn from an individual will help you gain something positive.

Blanca,
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right it doesn't matter your ethnicity each individual has their own culture and can learn about new cultures and teach about their cultures. As teachers we do need to be prepared as we know all students will come in allshapes and sizes. Basically as we teach we learn and what we learn from new cultures we teach.
Blanca,
ReplyDeleteI love how you said that by reading multicultural books we will not only be learning ourselves about the student's different cultures, but their peers will learn more too and therefore respect the other children. If the entire class is taught about the different cultures, then they will understand their classmates who are different than themselves and have a different level of respect for them. This is important especially now days whenever the children are so cruel and so quick to judge. Good job :)
Blanca,
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on thinking outside the box. We as future educators do not know what type of students we will get. Even in a predominately Hispanic or predominately White school, all kids are different and very unique.
I loved what you had to say about learning from your students! Keep up the good work!
